Jane Ivory seeks out landscapes and urban wastelands that reveal Man’s impact on the Earth. By purposely excluding people from her photographs, she more subtly alludes to humanity’s presence, channeling her passion for photography into doing her part to drive conservation and save the planet. She works in black and white, with the belief that stripping away color reveals the essence of the image, allowing poetry to emerge. Even when addressing urgent themes, she holds that subtlety is a most effective form of communication. Based in San Francisco, she continues a lineage of West Coast photography that advocates for environmental conservation, and whose photographic practice is deeply entwined with advocacy. Jane Ivory’s practice is informed by a lifelong engagement with image-making, beginning in her father’s darkroom and later formalized through an MFA in painting from the University of California, Berkeley. Her early career included roles at the San Francisco Museum of Art and as a gallerist, notably as co-owner of the Ivory/Kimpton Gallery. Ivory has exhibited widely, with recent and upcoming solo exhibitions at the Monterey Museum of Art, Fresno Art Museum, Sea Ranch Lodge, amongst others. Ivory is the author of several monographs, which are held in significant public collections including the Crocker, Stanford University, UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, and the Nevada Museum of Art. Her work has been recognized through awards, publications, and presentations across leading photographic institutions.
